Jesper Svensson wins Singapore play-off for first DP World Tour victory

25th March 2024
he Swede matched the course record with a closing 63 at Laguna National Golf Resort Club to get to 17 under but extra holes were required as Aphibarnrat eagled the last in a 64. Both men made a birdie on the first trip up the last and then exchanged a pair of pars before Aphibarnrat went over the back and made a bogey, leaving Svensson two putts for a par and victory. Svensson may have turned professional nearly five years ago, winning on the Nordic Golf League in 2020, but his big breakthrough came last year with his victory at the B-NL Challenge Trophy on the European Challenge Tour. He also achieved three second-places as he finished fifth on the Road to Mallorca and continued to catch the eye, finishing second at the Investec South African Open Championship this season in just his sixth DP World Tour start. Another runner-up finish came at the Bahrain Championship presented by Bapco Energies but he has now gone one better to win the opening event of the DP World Tour’s Asian Swing. “It’s been a lot of good golf so it was nice to finally come out on top,” he said. “It’s very hard to win so it’s really nice. “It’s been a long journey. To win on my first season out here, I couldn’t have dreamt of it. It’s always been a dream to be a winner on the DP World Tour and to achieve it feels amazing. “Combined with Challenge Tour last year and the beginning of this season I’ve had five second-place spots in the last year. I really wanted to come out on top here. “There was a couple of times today I told Lucky, my caddie… on 14 we were thinking about laying up we both said ‘no, we’re not finishing second again’ and it was the best shot of the week.” Svensson began the day five shots off the lead but got off to a blistering start, making birdies on the first and second and adding an eagle on the par-five third. He put an approach to eight feet at the sixth and chipped in at the eighth and while he then went bogey-bogey, birdies at the 12th and 13th handed him a one-shot lead. A stunning second at the next left him with eight feet for birdie as he took a three-shot lead but he bogeyed the next to leave the door ajar, Aphibarnrat had birdied the third, fifth, seventh and eighth but his chances looked to be fading as he bogeyed the 12th. He took advantage of the par-five 14th, left himself six feet at the next and then holed a long putt at the 16th to share top spot. Svensson then hit a brilliant tee-shot into the 17th to edge ahead and a two-putt birdie at the par-five last saw him set the target at 17 under. But Aphibarnrat was not done and he put his second to 15 feet at the 18th, holing

Porsche Singapore Classic: Five things to know

20th March 2024
The start of the Asian Swing Following the International Swing, the Asian Swing kicks off in Singapore, before heading to New Delhi for the Hero Indian Open. A one-week break then follows, before the world’s best golfers descend on Augusta National Golf Club for the first Major of the year. The Tour then visits South Korea and Japan for the second editions of the Korea Championship and ISPS HANDA – CHAMPIONSHIP respectively, before a Swing Champion is crowned after the Volvo China Open, which is returning to the schedule for the first time since 2019. The second Major of the year, the subsequent U.S. PGA Championship, will immediately follow, but while points accrued in the Major Championships will count on the Race to Dubai Rankings, they will not count in the Swing Rankings. So what’s on offer? As with the other Swings, the Swing Champion will earn $200,000 from an overall $1million Bonus Pool. Swing Champions will also qualify for each of the ‘Back 9’ events, while they will also earn an exemption into the next Rolex Series event. In the case of the Asian Swing, this means an exemption into the Genesis Scottish Open. Strydom defends Ockie Strydom stormed to a second DP World Tour title in six starts in last year’s Singapore Classic after a spotless final-round nine under par 63 earned him a one-shot victory over Finland’s Sami Välimäki. The South African had entered the final day at Laguna National Golf Resort Club four shots behind overnight leaders Jeunghun Wang and Alejandro del Rey but surged to the top of the leaderboard with the low round of the week. Despite first Del Rey and then Välimäki holding three-shot leads at different times on Sunday, Strydom finished with four birdies in his closing six holes, including a brilliant up-and-down at the last to clinch the title. Although he was unable to kick-on from that success, at a point making just one cut in 15 events on the DP World Tour last season, the 38-year-old returns to Singapore with a string of decent results to his name on the DP World Tour in 2024. A tied fourth finish in Bahrain was followed by a tie for 16th in Qatar and a tie for 31st back in South Africa at the SDC Championship. While his most recent result was a missed cut in the International Swing-ending Jonsson Workwear Open, a week off to regroup will have helped as he returns with favourable memories. Subtle changes to Singapore’s replica of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass One of the most interesting facts about Laguna National, is that its 17th green is a replica of the iconic 17th at TPC Sawgrass, where The PLAYERS was contested last week. The key difference is that it is a slightly longer hole in length than it’s American lookalike, playing between 180-200 yards rather than the roughly 130 yards at Sawgrass. In preparation for this year’s tournament, some subtle changes were made in order to give the option

La Hacienda Links unveils Heathland course upgrade to launch golf season

11th March 2024
Fresh from undertaking a full renovation of its Links course – named ‘Best Golf Course in Spain’ at the 2023 World Golf Awards – the acclaimed resort in Andalucia has unveiled a series of improvements to its second 18-hole championship layout as the countdown continues to the opening a new Fairmont hotel. As well as carrying out redesign work to enhance the original design by Dave Thomas, with the 13th hole now playing as a par-four and the 18th converted to a par-five with a repositioned new tee, other upgrades include the levelling of the first and 11th fairways to improve the playability of the Heathland course and significant landscaping work taking place from holes two to five and the tenth, 17th and 18th with the planting of mastic trees. In addition, the greenkeeping team at La Hacienda has installed solar panels on the eighth hole, cleaned and refurbished the lakes and bridges on the eighth and ninth holes, and reseeded a number of fairways with grasses that are more sustainable and better suited to the region’s climate. Javier Jimenez Casquet, director general at La Hacienda Links Golf Resort, said: “Having undertaken a major recent renovation of the Links course, it was very important that we made improvements to the Heathland course to bring it up to the standard of the other facilities at the resort. “Some of the changes that we have made were much needed, including moving the tee back on the 18th hole to create a challenging par-five that matches the quality of the rest of the course. Using the best sustainable practices, we now have two outstanding courses that complement each other perfectly, and this is the ideal way to launch an exciting year for the resort as we build towards the opening of our new Fairmont hotel.” The upgrade of the Heathland course is the latest in a series of major investments that La Hacienda Links Golf Resort has made in an ongoing redevelopment project that has seen the venue establish itself as one of the rising stars of European golf. Located in the Cadiz municipality of San Roque close to Sotogrande, the resort’s Links course runs along the beachfront with spectacular views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa, and has been one of the biggest course renovation projects to be undertaken in Europe in recent years. As part of the major transformation project to reconfigure and redesign the layout, American architect Kurtis Bowman was appointed to improve the hole layouts, conditioning, scenery and sustainability outcomes. Work undertaken included the remodelling of all tees, greens complexes and bunkers, and the redesign of several holes. In addition La Hacienda has undertaken a series of other upgrades to its golf and leisure amenities including the renovation of its clubhouse, the launch of a new website and the opening of a new halfway house for players on the Links course, while the resort is preparing to launch a new Fairmont hotel and villas in the near future –
